The Southern Maryland Scale Modelers meet every third Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at High Tide Games, 22599 MacArthur Blvd, California, Maryland, (San Souci Plaza, between McKay's and Mission BBQ).

We are also meeting online via Zoom most Thursdays at 7pm -- an email is sent to members with meeting info.

Everyone is welcome, all we ask is that you bring a project, finished or not, theme or non-theme to share during our Show-N-Tell discussion. Okay, you don't really have to bring a project...

2019 IPMS Nationals

We had a great time at Nationals in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Chattanooga chapter hosted a great show and contest! A few stats I noted during the awards ceremony:
  • Over 5,000 models on the competition tables
  • 961 registrants for the competitions
  • 1,675 display only models
The 3 Amigos did of course bring home some metal: Scot Samo, Andy Frill and Andy "Whitey" White.  Congratulations!

Our Club Display enjoyed place of honor in the contest room:

The NASPLANE display was a great hit. I overheard lots of folks talking about it, and I've noticed pictures of it have shown up on other websites. The special discussion topics on the Leader (Dale Earnhardt Jr), the pusher (Cessna), the only twin (Hooters), and of course the trail (GoDaddy - Danica Patrick). This will be a hard one to follow.

The Yellow Wings was photographed quite a lot. And the Burma Banshees was well received. The Frankenfort caught lots of people off guard as they approached the tables from one direction they assumed a formation ship, and from another an RAF Fortress III.

When I dropped by the display I also was able to chat with folks about all our displays and give them some background info on our great club.  I'm looking forward to San Marcos, Texas for 2020 but I won't be hauling a display that far.

  1. Very impressive! Love the NASPLANES! I've been interested for a while in joining your club. I've been meaning to stop by one of these 3rd Thursdays and bring some of my best models...mostly ships and cars. Was not sure you guys meet regularly as your last blog was January. I live just south of the Base, so maybe I'll try to catch the Sept. meeting. I have some ship dioramas I am pretty happy with.

    1. You can send me your email address to and I can put you on the distribution list.

  2. Thanks, Joe. The gap on this site is due solely to my lack of work-life balance. I'm fixing that...we generally send reminders about the meeting via email, then I repost here.

  3. Thanks Tim! I have been on the distribution list for at least half a year, and was pleased to see the latest update with your competition display. I was still going to take a chance this past year, and pack my best models up and get to a meeting and introduce myself...but if you think back, it seemed EVERY third Thursday it was raining heavily and just miserable weather. I wanted to pick a better time, as my car rarely sees

I stumbled on your club a while back scrolling through the Fine Scale Modeler gallery...I had no idea there was a club nearby. I already belong to Patuxent Aeromodelers where we meet at the museum in winter, so was hoping you guys still meet there, but I know where LSI is.

I am going to try to make your Sept meeting and bring my best work. :-)
