The Southern Maryland Scale Modelers meet every third Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at High Tide Games, 22599 MacArthur Blvd, California, Maryland, (San Souci Plaza, between McKay's and Mission BBQ).

We are also meeting online via Zoom most Thursdays at 7pm -- an email is sent to members with meeting info.

Everyone is welcome, all we ask is that you bring a project, finished or not, theme or non-theme to share during our Show-N-Tell discussion. Okay, you don't really have to bring a project...

202: June 2021 Monthly Meeting Minutes & Show and Tell

 17 June 2021

That was fun!  Lots of folks and the pizza was great.

21 Modelers met at our new meeting location at High Tide Games.  We had 20 models on the tables and 7 carrier landing models.

Three new members signed up!

As a group we brought another of our COVID Theme Builds -- Not-a-German Bf-109 1/48.  The monthly theme was Anniversary.  This month marks the 22nd Anniversary of the Southern Maryland Scale Modelers!  We had 4 people confirm they made that first meeting at Charlotte Hall.  Sometimes the only person at some of those early meetings was our then-President and founder: Chuck Conner.

Carrier Landings was a lot of fun.  Even our host, Rebecca gave it a try and accomplished a great "landing".  Link to the video of the carrier landings.

Pictures of the models that attempted/made landings:

And the trophy went to yours truly fr losing the most parts off his Buccaneer.

Let's Talk Models! #48

June 10th

Modelers on the zoom call: 21

Models discussed: 15

Tools & tips:

We discussed an alternative to Milliput 2-part moldable epoxy -- JB Weld Waterweld from any hardware store.  I tried it on my Buccaneer to replace my canopy with something solid and it does work just as well.  A bit harder, but it works well.

201: May 2021 Monthly Meeting Minutes & Show and Tell

27 May 2021

Okay, technically our first real meeting since the pandemic began and hoo boy did we had a lot of COVID builds to bring!

22 Modelers met at our new meeting location at High Tide Games (thanks Rebecca!) and there were

  67 models on the tables!

As a group we brought our first COVID Theme Build -- 357th FG Mustangs in 1/48.  The monthly theme was Desert Storm 30th Anniversary.  Whitey's S-3B with folded wings got the most votes -- so he got the bragging rights and some new #11 blades and sanding sticks for his efforts.

We chatted about adding a 1/24 (or 1/25) scale group build.  This is in the Theme nominations for 2022 but we can always do whatever we want so whether this makes the list for 2022 is up to the members.

Link to the product discussed -- Incredible White Mask Liquid Frisket which Collin swears is a great masking fluid.

Pandemic Group Builds

May 1st

So over the last year we came up with four group builds (or themes) that some of us decided to do in addition to the list here on the site:

  • 1/48 Scale Mustangs of the 357th -- Bene has a stack of decals and we build a P-51B/C/D with the yellow and red checkers on the noses.
  • 1/48 Scale Bf-109 without German markings -- Any kit, any variant, but no Luftwaffe markings.
  • 1/48 Scale Spitfires that are not British -- Any kit, any variant, but no RAF or FAA markings.
  • 1/700 Battleships -- Deviating from the trend above, we decided to go small.  Any kit, any battleship or battlecruiser from any period.  Waterline or full hull is choice of the modeler.
Hopefully we can get everyone together at once to show these off well before a show.  I'd like some photos to post here.

LTM #42: Let's Talk Models!

April 20th -- Okay folks, picture time again!

The April Theme is "A Trek to the Stars" -- Any spacecraft, real, sci-fi, or what-if.

The only completed theme model was the Enterprise -- so bragging rights goes to Joe.
