December 2022

We had 31 members present.

20221215_191551We welcomed two new members to the club: Will Clark and Gregg Hurla.

30 members participated in the Christmas gift exchange and stealing event.  Some folks are pictured multiple times because they kept getting the model they opened stolen and had to go back for another!  The stealing devolved into a free-for-all as no one really wanted the 1/35 M-10 Tank Destroyer that was the last kit to take and we slowly, painfully, and hilariously watched as most of the models reached three (3) steals and were ‘locked’.  A good time was had by all based on the laughter and general goofiness that took place.

20221215_202835A REAL TREAT was the placement of the completed “Rickshaw” at the meeting.  The Rickshaw has been a ‘gag gift’ in the club for many Christmas exchanges and it keeps going home with someone new each year.  Last year, Phill Allen’s son wound up with it and he actually BUILT IT to bring back.  Unfortunately he was not feeling well on the night of the meeting, but Dad (Phill) brought it in to share with the members.  He added rockets with fuses to each side and generally dressed it up a bit with fantasy upgrades, and did a fantastic job on the model itself.

20221215_194050This year’s ‘gag gift’ was a 1/32 Sweet Potato Stand by Arii; and it went home with Gregg Hurla (first meeting, and he is the one who gets the gag!).  Gregg also has a 1/48 train set in his mancave, and was contemplating the similarity in scale to go ahead and build it and add it to his train layout.  Time will tell if he does so, or it gets returned and is a potential model in next year’s gift exchange!

Exhaust Heat Shield

Tamiya M41 Walker Bulldog Project — Exhaust Heat Shield Rust & Weathering Technique

IMG_1363Below are my steps used to achieve a realistic rusty appearance to the exhausts on the Tamiya M41 Walker Bulldog kit.

  1. Airbrush a base of red-brown per your liking, but aim to simulate a rusty tone.  I used a mix of Tamiya Flat Red (XF-7) and Flat Brown (XF-10).
  2. Spray/Airbrush on a chipping medium.  I used Ammo by Mig brand.

NOTE 1: “Ammo by Mig” are my preferred weathering products b/c application matches expectations

IMG_2107

  1. Base coat OLIVE DRAB to match the muffler to the rest of the vehicle’s base color.
    1. I’m assuming but didn’t verify, this was how these units came from the factory.  Likely a bad assumption.
    2. My O.D. was a custom mix of the new Tamiya Lacquer Paint Olive Drab (LP-28), Olive Drab # 2 (LP-29) and a splash of Buff (LP-75) to lighten it.
    3. I lighten all my Tamiya mixes with buff instead of white to keep it on the warmer, dustier side.  I feel like I can always coat with a thin layer of buff for a dusty look as a much needed blend layer if contrast is suddenly too stark.

IMG_6850

  1. Chip off the Olive Drab.
    1. Using a damp sponge and a cheap, stiff paint brush (I trim some of the bristles as required to stiffen)…I slowly chipped away the outer O.D. layer.
    2. I used the sponge more than the brush.
    3. My goal was to try to leave some of O.D. around the outer edges to look like overspray had built up on the muffler and started to bake off.

NOTE 2: Again, I didn’t reference and verify this…its just how I’ve seen mufflers and heat shields age from other real world examples.

NOTE 3: The rest of this involves pigments, and I make sure to put down a disposable drop cloth to catch the mess…more pigment ends up under the model than on it

IMG_6767

  1. I applied AK Interactive, Dark Rust pigment Powder with my stiff brush, stippling back and forth with pigment and then a little bit of pigment fixer.
    1. I used Ammo by Mig fixer but IPA will work.
    2. The Fixer product was hotter than the IPA so keep that in mind with the base finish you are working with when selecting a fixer.
    3. I only use 91% IPA…not sure if this makes a difference, but its my only IPA data point
  1. I applied sparse amounts of AK Interactive Ochre Rust (aka Yellow) pigment in the same method for tone modulation.
  2. Proceeded to apply various combination of ground, soft pastels  using brown, orange, red and yellow to please my Mark 1 eyeball.  IPA as a fixer here works.  Let the pigment dry and cure.
  3. I then applied a back-and-forth combo of AK Interactive’s Exhaust Wash and Ammo’s Fixer with more pigments to build a rusty texture to the muffler.  I used a stippling action with my stiff brush to assist achieving my texture.
  4. Let dry, then inspect.  Repeat until you have a color, texture you are satisfied with.

October 2022

Notes from our latest meeting plus photos from the Show-n-Tell.  Occasionally a tip, trick, or technique will be added.
We had 18 members attend our October meeting, plus a new-old member returned and two new members joined us. There were 31 models on the tables of various genre and in various stages of completion which meant we were discussing models right up until closing at High Tide Games.
Carey Marrinen, (new member) invited by Dave Fuller,  scratchbuilds large scale (1/6) tanks.
Dave Fuller: 1/16 AMT Shelby cobra. 427 S/B Ford motor, building for a Washington ship modeler member to replicate his car.
Steve Workman: Alfa Class 1/700 Arii kit.  1/72 Hasegawa B5N2 Kate “AI-311”.  (Middle kit in Kate line up)
Joe Hegedus: 1/72 Martin T4M Esoteric vac kit. Brass strip interplane struts, many white metal parts. Torpedo was modified from a Devastator kit. XTB2D Sky Pirate, built by Douglas to carry 4 (yes FOUR) TORPEDOES off a MIDWAY class carrier.  1/72 Planet Models limited run resin kit.
Vince Mankowski: 1/48 SA-341D Gazelle by Fujimi. OOB.
Jim Rotramel: stainless steel F-111 shape from ‘Vark Memorial.
Jeff Cook: 1/72 B5N2 Kate Hasegawa.  “AI-307”. Tamiya acrylic paints except underside was lacquer.
Darrin Cook:  Kitty Hawk 1/35 MH-60R Sea Hawk in progress. Surface detail, really nice. Interior detail needed some work but was beautiful. Instructions have confusing info. Interior cabin caused gaps in fuse assembly until removal of channel locator block at fwd end of cabin insertion track.
Dan Yakel: Sherman 1/35 Dragon.  Rolled over idler wheel, now on hold for replacement. Eduard 1/48 Roland C.II.  Roland wound up with large seams. Dan is trying to convert a US Studebaker truck into a Katyusha rocket launcher; we learned some new words tonight.
Andy Frill: 1/48 Tamiya P-38J. Wing tips didn’t fit well (!). AK Xtreme Metal colors on bare plastic still showed the swirl marks in the injection plastic.
Tim Holland: Hasegawa 1/72 B5N2 Kate. Matchbox SBC-4 with Star Fighter decals and resin cockpit installed. VB-3 USS Saratoga (CV-3) just before they transitioned to Dauntless. Joe owes a 500lb bomb to add to it. Fine Molds 1/72 F-4J, amazing assembly as normal seam lines are all done on natural panels and virtually disappear during assembly. Horizontal and vertical surfaces all simply slot together, fit is impeccable.
Vic DiSantis:  1/48 F11F-1 by Fonderie Miniatures.  Still wrestling with the tail code markings for the aircraft he wants to build. Has taken longer than any kit he’s ever built.
Andy White: Kitty Hawk 1/48 FJ-2 Fury done as a Pax YFJ-2 test bird.  Academy/Minicraft 1/48 T-34B Mentor.
Phill Allen: that RC boat though, Holy Cow!
Ken Kelly: A-12, Tu-28 Fiddler, Anigrand resin kit. MiG-21F.
Jonathan Wright: Aoshima 1/72 E16A-2 Zuiun “Jake”.

Gerry Whiteside: 1/72 F-5E Hasegawa w/ Uprise. Hasegawa TBM-3 back dated to TBF-1. Puma 1/72 by Italeri.
